AMSTERDAM — SunPower Global and WindBridge International announced a landmark $240 billion all-stock merger Tuesday that will create the world's largest renewable energy company, with a combined installed capacity of 580 gigawatts across 67 countries — enough to power roughly 400 million homes.
The merged entity, to be named AtlasEnergy, will be headquartered in Amsterdam and listed on both the New York Stock Exchange and Euronext. The transaction is subject to regulatory approval in 23 jurisdictions but is expected to close within 14 months.
Strategic Rationale
Both companies cited accelerating demand from corporate energy buyers, government renewable mandates, and the economics of scale in manufacturing and grid integration as drivers of the deal.
"The energy transition is not waiting for anyone," said SunPower CEO Ingrid Hoffman. "To be relevant at the scale this transition demands, you need to be big, and you need to be everywhere."
Analysts broadly welcomed the combination but raised concerns about integration complexity and regulatory risk in markets where one or both companies hold dominant positions. Environmental groups called for robust conditions to prevent the new entity from acquiring fossil fuel assets.
