LONDON — England qualified for the FIFA World Cup with a dramatic 2–1 victory over Poland at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday, Harry Thornton heading home a cross from Marcus Webb in the 93rd minute to send a capacity crowd of 90,000 into delirium.
Poland had equalised through a Piotr Kaczmarek penalty in the 71st minute to cancel out Jermaine Cole's opener, and for over twenty minutes it appeared England might have to settle for a play-off place. Then Thornton, the 22-year-old Aston Villa striker who had been booed by sections of the crowd after a costly miss in the first half, rose highest at the far post to redirect Webb's measured delivery past goalkeeper Marcin Bulka.
The Qualifier Campaign
England finished top of Group G with 22 points from ten matches, conceding only five goals in the entire campaign. Manager David Hendricks has built a cohesive defensive unit around Chelsea's 26-year-old centre-back pair of James Carter and Oluwaseun Adeyemi, and the team's 14 clean sheets across all competitive fixtures in 2025 represent a national record.
"I am immensely proud of this group," Hendricks said at his post-match press conference. "We were tested tonight in the worst possible way and we found a way. That is the character of a tournament-winning team."
